Category: Home-Additions - Topic: Add A Balcony To Home
Some people that have a new home, or have had one for awhile, can do some changes to their property. There are many options of the things that you can do. A lot of it can depend on the size and placement of your home. Does your home have a yard? Is your home two-stories tall? If so, a balcony may be a wonderful add-on. Balconies can really give you an excellent view of your surroundings. A landscape perspective of your land and the area you live.
Start off with the design and specifics of your balcony. Size and the type of materials are what you will need. Consult your hardware store on this one. Some definite tools you will need will be drill lag bolts, wood screws, joist hanger, wood glue, skill saw, leveler, carpenter square and measuring tape. Now the wood dimensions for this balcony are needed for any outdoor project and should be pressure treated: 2x12, 2x10, 2x4 and 4x6. Always do a material count and go to your local hardware store to make sure you have everything.
Next take your 2x12 and 2x12 floor joist and cut to desired measurement. Nail this in its proper place and secure the ledger with the lag bolts. Try as best to use a minimum of 6 inch lag bolts. After that use the joist hangers to secure the floor joist. Now put in a plywood sub floor using glue and screws to keep it in place. Move the corner support posts in the corners to secure the hand rails. Once that is done you can install your hand rail. I must remind you to always level through everyone of these processes. You do not want any measurements to be un-even.
Now establish what kind of floor you want on your balcony. Use your materials to build your floor. The last thing to do is stain and seal the hand rail. You now have a new balcony.
