Category: Restoration-and-Cleaning - Topic: Fix China Apply Cellulose Adhesive
With so many adhesives out there sometimes it can be tough to decide what kind to use for what situation. Broken wood, glass and plastics especially can be difficult to decide what to use. You never want to apply an adhesive to an item that it is not really meant to be used on. Imagine trying to put together a broken piece of china and using the wrong adhesive. That piece of china is now useless and may even be ruined. That is why it is recommended to use a cellulose adhesive. Some objects made of plastic may be able to be fixed using rubber cement instead of a cellulose adhesive. Test to see if it will work by putting a drop of rubber cement on the plastic. If it sticks then it can be used. If it can’t be used begin by applying the cellulose adhesive to a small wood strip. Use the wood strip to apply the adhesive to the area you want bonded.
It is recommended that you put two coats if you want a stronger hold. Just remember to let the first coat dry to get a little tacky so the second coat can stick. After both coats are applied allow the adhesive to sit and dry for two days. Make sure to keep what you are bonding in a safe place where it can’t be moved around. The adhesive needs to be un-disturbed for two days for it to fully stick. Once the two days are up use an acetone to remove excess cellulose for that smooth surface you want on your newly bonded object. Acetone can be found in most nail polishes. Now the only thing to take care of is to make sure that your object doesn’t break again.
