A room with old carpet can be made to look new by laying individual vinyl squares. The question that first comes to mind is how to prepare the floor surface for vinyl installation. First, remove al of the old carpet and the tack strip, making sure to eliminate all staples, tacks and nails. Sand the surface is not necessary, and might be more of a problem than it is worth. Instead, lay down a covering of louwan over the subfloor and smooth any seams resulting in an even surface for vinyl installation. Now you are ready to install the vinyl squares according to the manufacturer's procedures. After the vinyl squares are in place, install new baseboards and apply a fresh coat of paint.

If this sounds like too much of a hassle, contact a local vinyl flooring expert.
