Category: Landscaping - Topic: Adjust Acidity Garden Soil

When adjusting your soils acidity count there are many factors that require looking into. PH levels are very important to consider. Since pH levels vary 1 to 14 the scale may not be easy to judge. If your scale is in the middle it is neutral, but if the scale is lower the acid count can be considerably high. Each plant put into the soil needs a different level of acidity depending on the plant itself.

With that said, determine what you will be planting in your soil. Once determined take a soil sample from the area you want to plant. This can be done by either going to your local garden center or by purchasing a testing kit. Always dig to about 6 to 8 inches down into the soil to get a proper soil sample. Finding the results, you may now change your acidity levels. What you do next depends on the kind of soil you have. For instance: sandy soil would require 4 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard. Loamy soil would require 8 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard. Clay soil would require12 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard. Peaty soil would require 25 ounces of hydrated lime per square yard. Each of these additions will increase your soil's pH level and lower the acidity amount. Doing this over a period of time will maintain the soil's status and test annually as well to make sure.

Always remember to read all instructions and directions when using supplies and kits. Wearing protective gloves and masks are recommended when handling chemicals. Consult your local garden center about certain equipment and directions for safe and proper handling.
