If you use the center knob to direct water to the shower or tub, and the water still flows from the tub, the tub will fill with excess water.
To fix this issue, diverter needs to be repaired or replaced.
It is not uncommon, depending on the age of the faucet, for water run from the tub spout during a shower. However, if the water flow becomes excessive, a repair of the diverter is most likely needed.
Also, make sure the drain is not draining slowly, which would exacerbate the problem- hair and soap are often causing the drain to clog. For regular drain flow protection a biodegradable product such as our Bio Clean may alleviate the slow drain problem.
