A DIY beginner can tackle the task of cleaning brick. Fist, if you don't already have a power washer you'll probably want to rent one. Then pressure wash the brick around your home. Once the pressure washing is complete, reprime the brick, repaint and the brick will look new. If you are not repainting, make sure that all lose paint is removed.
