Category: Concrete - Topic: Apply Concrete Sealer Properly

A lot of the time concrete can have its down falls. Sometimes your garages and patios need protection from such things as dampness, stains and steels underneath. If you just do the work needed to make sure your concrete can be manageable; then you can make sure it lasts longer.

First step is to determine what kind of concrete sealer you need. There are many kinds: acrylic, epoxy or urethane. Tell the person at your local hardware store what kind of concrete you have. Some sealers may work better for outside concrete. This matters because acrylic can protect against penetration. Epoxy can do the same but is a little bit stronger. There is also the issue of moisture. Epoxy is nice but urethane may be better because it can absorb more.

Now prep your concrete area. Clean the concrete making sure you get rid of all the dirt and dust to make it ready. Once the area is cleared and cleaned, etch the surface with a thin muriate acid solution or vinegar. When these products are combined with water they coagulate to a mellow solution. Have your sprayer ready with the sealer inside of it. Using a sprayer is important because you don’t want your sealer all over the place making a mess. Now apply an even coat to the area you want to seal and use a brush to even it out. It will take up to seven days sometimes for this stuff to dry. Once dried if it looks different then you wanted apply a second coat. Always let the drying take time. If you work on it or touch it, sooner than it has to, it may be ruined and you may need to start all over again. To avoid this just take your time and leave the area be for the drying-period.
