Some old homes have issues when dealing with grout on the brick. Say that you just bought a 1930's arts and crafts home. The grout on the outside of the brick home and the brick used on the fireplace is black. There is one simple way to deal with this: paint it to care to the color you desire. The reason for doing it that way is because black grout would be a chore to remove, and may take forever. Now if you want to whitewash the fireplace, I would suggest a visit to your paint supplier, and request the very best quality brick paint, you will probably need at least two coats.
