If your landscaping is getting older, the trees might start having problems.
There are a few things to keep in mind when evaluating the state of the current trees. For example, mountain ash trees whose leaves and berries shrivel and turn dark in the summer may be getting a summer fungus or some leaf-burn from the hot dry weather.
You may notice hemlock trees losing lower needles on the bottom branches; but this is normal in aging trees as they focus growth on the upper part of the tree.
If you notice cedar trees dry at bottom, and a general loss of green, it might be winter damage. Pruning yearly in the summer months should stimulate growth and result in healthier trees.
As a general rule it might help your trees to be fertilized with tree spikes once in a while.
