If you have a maple tree that is getting too tall, and not bushy enough to provide shade, you would need to prune back the tips on the branches that are most upright and are the most dominant.
Don't prune too much; only a small amount needs be removed to approximately one inch wood or so. You may prune all of the less dominate branches equally, as you did the top, to maintain over all size and shape. Use a 10 foot orchard ladder, r bypass type hand pruner, a 10 foot pole pruner and loppers to make your job easier.
