A leak in an A/C line or other cause may cause a carpet to become saturated with water. Running a wet vacuumed and after a dehumidifier and fan is a good way to dry the area. If, after the drying has been accomplished you notice black mold or a musty and mildew smell, you may have an ongoing water moisture problem inside the walls.
To detect if there is existing moisture you need to use proper moisture reading instruments. Water in the walls it is more difficult to get at than carpet, and may persist after wet vacuum and fans. To determine if structural 2X4s and frames remain wet, consult a certified applied structural drying company.
