If you're not turning your attic into a bedroom, a ladder is another option for reaching your new roof-level space, and they aren't what they used to be. A variety of options now offer improved design, safety and convenience. Wood ladders are less expensive than metal units and have a nice finish for easy painting or staining. Aluminum and fiberglass ladders are more expensive but last longer and can hold up to 300 pounds. Most ladders are hinged to two or three unfolding sections so they take up less space. Most attic trap doors come with a pull string that allows the hinged ladder to smoothly unfold on its own with an easy-gliding spring system. Stairsteps and telescoping ladders are a few unique options on the market right now. Stairsteps fold into a temporary staircase. They may cost more and take up additional space due to their bulky construction, but they allow for easy ascension into the attic. Telescoping ladders are made of aluminum and descend straight down from the ceiling. They are adjustable and can fit into any space and don't take up much space in the attic itself. All attic ladders come with a variety of safety features like built-on handrails, attachable lights that turn on automatically, no-slip treads attached to each rung to reduce the chance of accidents, and no-slip feet to secure balance and ensure its hold to the floor while you climb up. Ladders are also typically fire proofed and trapdoors come equipped with locking systems to protect against break-ins.
