Choosing exterior lights is not only a question of incadescent or florescant, but also of the lighting blub temperature grade. Compact florescant blubs will work in temperatures below zero and can last in very harsh conditions. More conventional bulbs will not be able to withstand the hard temperatures that many regions in the US bring.
