Category: Pools-Spas - Topic: Replacing Your Pool Filter

The sand in your pool filters may not have to be replaced as often as you may think. If the filter sand looks dirty that means your filter is working. Every couple of years a cleaner (that can be purchased at your local pool store) will help strip the filters held up dirt. In a house pool that is used on less than 8 months of the year, the filter can last for us to 15 years when regular chemical cleaning occurs (as described above). The filters only have to be changed because the "sand" is no longer coarse and becomes smooth causing dirt and grime to escape the filter. If you are filling your pool with well water (or other water that is very high in minerals) it may be best to change the filter every 5-7 years.
