Category: Basement-Refinishing - Topic: What Causes Basement Flooding

If your basement floods water that comes up through the floor drains, the cause may be due to one of two problems. First of all, if it only occurs during heavy rains, these heavy rains may cause the main sanitary sewer system to be overloaded which cannot handle the additional rain water. If it can't take all the rain water at once, then it will usually back up into the basements of the neighbors houses. Another possibility is if the drainage tiles beneath your basement floor are hooked into the regular sewer system instead of running into a separate sump crock/pump system. Sometimes when the drain tiles are hooked into the sewer in this process, the main drain leaving the house will as well fail to carry the storm water away as fast as possible, and leading the water to go backwards through the floor drain. An efficient solution to this problem can be determined once it is known whether or not the city sewer system or the house piping is the issue at hand.
