If your chimney is not easy to light or after being lit the fire goes out; or if the the door needs to be held to give oxygen to the fire to keep it going, then your chimney might be blocked.

If the chminey does not properly draft or if smoke enters the room, this also might indicate a blocked chimney flue. The most likely reasons for a blocked flue is a bird nests, critter or build up of creosote in the chimney. To resolve the blockage you can either buy a brush and rods and sweep the blockage away, or call a local chimney professional. If you clean the chimney yourself, remember to keep the doors closed and tape over the opening before you start to clean.
