A common concern is how to clean chimney bricks that are covered with smoke stains. The most common approach is to remove stains with cleaning solvents. Solvents can be obtained commercially or you can try a household cleanser containing a bleach, or a mixture of ammonia and water. Prior to applying any solvent to the chimney, be sure to spot clean a small area. Combine the solvent with talcum or flour and make a thick paste to apply to the bricks bricks. Water down the chimney before applying the paste, then apply the paste to the chimney stain. After drying, scrape the residue off with a scraping tool and rinse the area with water.
