Category: Chimney - Topic: Chimney Flue Cleaning

Cleaning your chimney can be an inexpensive and relatively easy job. First rent a chimney brush that is the right size for your chimney height and is appropriate for the inside diameter of the flue. After opening the damper, seal the fireplace opening with plastic or an old blanket or whatever you can late discard. From the rooftop, insert the brush into the flue and push down, gently working the brush up and down against the flue. Apply enough force to remove excess soot but not damage the liner or mortar. You can work from the bottom of the chimney, and insert the brush through the fireplace opening and work it up the flue. After the dust and soot settles, lay a drop cloth around the fireplace opening and remove the seal. Brush up removed soot and use a wet-dry vacuum to finish the cleanup.
