Ever think you can tuck-point a chimney? If you are a little handy you probably can. Start by applying concrete adhesive to your existing mortar, and add mortar adhesive to the wet mortar. After this you should clean the area with muriatic acid, but be careful handling the acid as it is very toxic ; appropriate safety measures such as gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves should be employed. Use a high dilution to begin the cleaning and slowly pour the acid into the water- not water into a container containing muriatic acid. Acid of suffucuent strength will produce bubbling when applied. After cleaning, be sure to rinse and flush the area with water. If you do not feel comfortable handling the acid, call a chimney professional for an estimate.
