The ash dump in a fireplace can often let in too much air and cause the fireplace to burn quickly and not produce adequate heat. It is tempting to want to fix this problem by applying mortar and fill in the ash dump, but there are better solutions. One such idea is to install an air tight ash dump door, for which the best advise will come from a local chimney sweep.
