Category: Chimney - Topic: Identify Chimney Leak
Leaks often appear where the roof adjoins the meets the chimney.
Attempts to fix a water leak may include patching around the chimney, and building
an elevation so water pool and rest in the leak area. Home fixers also try and
look at the mortar nd inspect for cracks- a difficult job.
A more sure way to identify the leakage point is by performing a water test.
By running water on the shingles in this area first,
ou can see of the shingles are leaking; if this test is negative,
run water on the brick areas of the chimney, and then the cap of the chimney.
As you work your way up the chimney, pay close attention when the leak is noticed
as this is the most likely area.
Also, chimney flashings should be properly installed on your chimney.
Some contractors tar these areas to prevent leaks, but the protection afforded by tar can be days to years and very unreliable; next time you have the roof repaired or replaced, consider having chimney flashings installed.
