Category: Garden - Topic: Healthy Trees Apply Fertilizer

Trees may dominate most plants in comparison but they need to be fertilized just like any other plant. Like smaller plants, trees can have similar health issues. Once the proper fertilizer is applied you will see a huge difference.

Start by scattering dry fertilizer in about a 12 inch circle around the trunk and base of the newly planted tree. For older trees, those have grown considerably over the years, expand the circle even wider and do it around the outer edges of the foliage. Be sure to water the area where the fertilizer was applied; but, do not over saturate the area. This will cause the fertilizer to dilute. With dry or liquid fertilizer, fill holes in the soil all around the base of the tree.

Some people like to dig holes themselves. Then there are other people who prefer what are called tree spikes. Tree spikes can go directly into the ground. Some people will actually dig the holes and then insert the tree spike into the hole. Either way, put the tree spike into the ground. Each tree spike will have fertilizer in it which is specific to each tree. Fruit trees are often tree spiked so to avoid any chemical spray being used on the fruit itself. Just remember to water all of them thoroughly. There are also liquid fertilizers that can be applied to the holes. Now is when spraying comes into play. Using a fertilizer sprayer, cover the foliage with the spray. Normally what happens is trees leaves will absorb the spray giving it the right amount of nourishment. Using a tree syringe, you will now inject the tree with a solution for fertilizing. The solution can be dry or liquid.

To find out what types of solution to use for your specified tree go to your local nursery or forestry supplier. They can also help you with what kind of fertilizer or nutrients are needed.
