Painting your stairs can completely change the look and feel of your home. If your stairs have never been painted before and are some type of wood, you have two different options for painting the stairs. The paint that can be chosen for the stairs can either be oil based floor paint, latex based or water based. Though oil based paint will be harder to clean and take longer to initially dry, this kind of paint, if the primer is placed on correctly, will provide the nicest look. Some people will elect to put down water or latex based wall paint on the stairs. The finish of this product, though quicker and easier to work wit,h may not be up to your satisfaction. Wall paint was made for the wall and not to be walked on. Over time, if you paint your stairs will wall paint, the paint will begin to chip and fade from the friction made on the stairs.
When painting the stairs make sure to paint every other stair so that you have somewhere to stand while painting the staircase. DO NOT WALK on the oil based paint at least for 24 hrs. Do not lay carpet on the stairs for at least 3 days after the paint has been completed.
