If your shower and tub cannot remain hot for a period long enough to take a comfortable shower, there may be something wrong with the dip tube in the water heater. The dip tube, when it is broken, will allow hot and cold water to mix together and cause this problem. Because the flow of water is so great into a shower/tub area the problem is extrapolated and made worse. There are a few other exceptions with the heater that could cause these problems, however, these issues need to only be addressed by a licensed plumber who has the correct knowledge and tools to diagnose and fix the problem with your water heater.
