Category: Plumbing - Topic: Unclog Drain DIY Steps To Take

The first step to cleaning a clogged drain is locating where your clog is. If the clog is happening only on one fixture it'll be much easier to locate than if it is happening in your entire home. A professional, if the clog is very deep or in multiple locations throughout your home, will use what is called a plumbing snake to locate the clog and break it up. Many clogs, however, don't need to be cleared with a plumbing snake. If the clog isnt to deep there are a variety of plunging tools that will work on a variety of drains. To help make your plunger suction its best, place petroleum jelly at the bottom of the plunger. If the plunger doesn't work and you're at a kitchen sink, you'll have to go under the sink and work on the plumbing like a professional. You'll want to have a bucket and towels handy to catch water and wipe up and spilled water that comes out when you remove the "trap" under the sink and clean this as well. The trap will have some attachments that keep it in place. These can usually be removed with ease. If the trap and plunger dont work, calling a professional or renting a plumbing snake will be your next option. It always a good idea to only use household drain cleaners as a last resort.
