Category: Air-Conditioning - Topic: Funny Noises Coming From The Furnace
It is normal, when the furnace is running, to hear creaky sounds coming from within the duct work. In houses that have been around for awhile, this is really common. It may be hard to localize where the sound is coming from, but if it seems to come from within the house, and make a metallic creak sound every twenty seconds; it is probably coming from within the furnace. The noises you are hearing when your furnace is running is most likely from your furnace heat exchanger expanding and contracting as the metal surface is heating up at the beginning of the heating cycle) and cooling down at the end of the cycle. This is common and will not effect in any way the operation of your furnace, older furnaces will make these noises. Over time this constant expansion/contraction will eventually cause the metal surface to fatigue and will cause a crack in the heat exchanger surface which can lead to a dangerous condition as carbon monoxide leaking into the house. For this reason, I always recommend that you have your heating system serviced annually.
